Commission is charged only on winning markets. For Lay bets, remember your liability is stake × (odds − 1).

What is BSP (Betfair Starting Price)?

BSP is the Exchange‑derived starting price at the jump. It’s popular on Australian thoroughbred, harness and greyhound races because late liquidity often sharpens prices. You won’t know the exact number until the race begins, but you avoid babysitting the market in the final minute. Many punters use BSP when they can’t watch late moves live.

BSP vs Fixed Back

If you’d back at 3.40 10 minutes out but BSP settles at 3.80, BSP improved your price. If BSP settled at 3.20, you’d have done better taking 3.40 early. Your net still considers commission.

Lay at BSP

You can also lay at BSP. Your stake is the backer’s stake and your risk is the liability. If the horse loses, you win the backer’s stake (less commission).

When to Consider BSP

High‑liquidity metro meetings near the jump, or when you can’t monitor late price action. For thin country meetings, manually placing prices may give more control over fills.

FAQs & Glossary

How is commission calculated?

Commission is applied to your net winnings in a market. If you win on Runner A and lose on Runner B within the same market, the losses offset the winnings before commission is applied. If your net is negative, no commission is paid.

What is MBR?

Market Base Rate (MBR) is the maximum commission rate for that market (e.g., 8%, 10%). Actual charged rates can vary by promotions or products; check the market Rules.

Liability (Lay)

Your potential loss if the selection wins: stake × (odds − 1).

Expected Value (EV)

EV is your average outcome per bet considering both outcomes and their probabilities. In the calculator, add your probability to see EV after commission.

Tip: Always compute expected value after commission, especially on thinner markets.
